Nursing science has been taught at the University of Tampere since 1981, originally under the Faculty of Medicine and since 1990 at the Department of Nursing Science. The Department offers the academic degrees of Bachelor of Health Science (nursing) and Master of Health Science (nursing) in following programmes:

In all the courses, the major subject is nursing science. All degree programmes also share the same basic structure: students in each programme take the same general studies and subject studies in nursing science, and then go on to specialize through subject-specific studies. The Department pursues the profile of family nursing. The content of nursing education and research is related to family nursing.
The Department has about 300 students in Master's degree programmes and an additional 60 students in doctoral programmes.

The University of Tampere embraces many fields of science and its research profile is extensive and multidisciplinary. There are six faculties and nine independent institutes. The University of Tampere is the biggest provider of higher education in Finland for social sciences and the accompanying administrative sciences. The Faculties are as follows:Economics and Administration; Education; Humanities; Information Sciences; Medicine, and Social Sciences

Some 15,200 students are currently pursuing degrees at the University of Tampere. Every year approximately one thousand master's degrees and one hundred doctoral degrees are produced. The personnel number about 2,100.
