Title   Education program for suicide prevention among mental health care users

Target Group   Mental health care users with experience of severe mental illness (SMI) at least 5 years

Aim of training  
  • To prevent suicide among mental health care users
  • To stimulate and support self-help of mental health care with SMI users in suicide prevention

Length  

Total duration: 8 hours.
Program is delivered during 2 days seminar: 8 sessions x 45 minutes (with coffee breaks and break for lunch). 4 sessions each day.


Overall purpose of training  
  • To raise suicide awareness of users and to provide adequate knowledge on suicide problem.
  • To teach skills about using of self-help principles in suicide prevention.
  • To motivate users to help each other in crisis situations.

Trainers  

This training program should be delivered by at least two trainers working together. Trainers must have own experience in mental health care as users and have had experience in suicide problems in the past (not suicidal at the moment). Additional requirement for trainers is ability to facilitate groups. Some experience in teaching and presentation skills would be beneficial. External supervision and backup by mental health professionals is necessary during whole training program. The degree of involvement of supervisors depends on the severity of problems raised by participants during the training, as well on the experience of trainers with this program..
