Title   Research Skills

Target Group   People with experience of long term or repeated use of mental health services with an interest in gaining research skills and research experience.

Aim of training   The overall aim of the programme is to provide people who use mental health services with an opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and experience in research methods and to gain relevant work experience through their involvement in research project work.

Length   6 months in total (including research practice).

Overall purpose of training  

In pursuing the aims of this the training the following opportunities for personal development and prograssion will be offered:

  • The opportunity to develop skills to enable someone to carry out their own investigation of a subject/topic area with capability and confidence.
  • Personal satisfaction, sense of accomplishment and confidence through gaining new skills and experience.
  • Development of research skills and experience that may lead to further opportunities for involvement in research and evaluation work.
  • Development of skills and experiences that are transferable to other occupational/ employment situations e.g. project planning, project management, interviewing skills, time management, report writing skills, basic statistics, designing graphs, presentation skills
  • In addition to the project work, individual participants may apply for academic credits for their learning from Middlesex University (not compulsory). These can be used towards gaining further university qualifications.

Trainers  

1.  Mental health service users with experience in facilitating training with the target group – preferably with some research experience

2. Others with experience of teaching research methods plus experience of working with people who use mental health services.
