The social inclusion\lifelong learning strategy adopted in the EMILIA project consists in assisting the 9 demonstration sites (which are either Universities or mental health services) in the EMILIA project to:

  1. Systematically review demonstration site core functions as to the degree to which service users are involved in them.
  2. Define priority areas of either educational or service development in which service users could be more involved
  3. Create occupational opportunities in demonstration sites varying from full time work to sessional input, for mental health service users in these designated priority areas for development, in three broad categories: trainers\educators; researchers\auditors; and direct service providers either in user-led services or in mainstream services
  4. Create a tailored strategy for the demonstration site organisations designed to assist them to implement these designated occupational roles, including the development of support strategies for service users in these new roles
  5. Create a tailored lifelong learning development plan for service users in the demonstration sites to assist them to acquire the skills and knowledge for these new roles
  6. Develop a series of 17 accredited training packages which demonstration sites can choose from in order to assist service users in their learning development
  7. Develop learning pathways so that service users can gain academic credits and awards according to their level of ability, based on the learning undertaken
  8. Create service user employment and support pathways within demonstration site organisations (7 mental health services and 2 universities)
  9. Employ and support service users in the roles appropriate within each demonstration site (research\audit; education\training; user-led service provision or mainstream service provision in designated sector of provision)
  10. Systematically evaluate this process as to the degree to which this strategy is effective in achieving social inclusion for the service users concerned
  11. Disseminate findings on pan-European basis.
